Rack & pinion

So today while I was driving my power steering randomly stoped working and randomly started working again the pump isn't making any noise could it be the rack & pinion. And is this a common problem

Low on fluid or wrong type, pinched line, ps pump itself or the rack.

Im going to try the rack & pinion first I just can't seem to figure out why it would go out after only 55000 miles?

Due to lack of Info, I am going to assume you have a 07 Mustang only from your screen name.

First thing to check is Fluid level and condition. Does the fluid move in the reservoir?

Try (while sitting still and you have no assist) reving engine to 2500 and turn wheel. Does it have assist? Do you still have power brake assist? At idle?

Just from what your saying it could be rack, or pump.
