  • Feedback on "Cold Air Induction"

I've never used an aftermarket air intake on my vehicles. The K&N FIPK & others with a tube & a cone or cylindrical filter - they pull under hood air - HOT air. Now K&N, Airaid & most of the others have added baffles to limit hot air injestion, but most of the air is still pulled around the perimeter of these baffles.

I usually just remove the factory silencer & enlarge the intake hole on the factory airbox. On my Ranger I enlarged the air intake hole to 3" x 7", that worked well & sounds good. It pulls air from behind the headlight.

I've considered an Airaid CAI for my 12 Mustang. This unit has a complete airpan & even hooks into the stock airduct, the open top seals to the hood. Now Dyno tests show a 13 HP gain, but the hood is up on these tests, & the open tops gets lots of cool air. But in normal driving, this setup will pull most of it's air from the factory duct.

Anyone seen reals gains from these? Feedback?

I've noticed a lot of people sticking with the stock intake on the '11- up cars. I just tossed in a panel filter for now.

I have had several CAI kits on several different vehicles. My best bang for the buck was just sticking a cone filter on the end of the stock air tubing. I always thought the CAI's were more for look, rather then actual HP.

Some people have actually lost power/ET with the cheap cold air kits for the '11+ GTs. The stock intake is really effective at getting outside air into the engine. The CAIs use a dam and rubber seal to keep hot underhood air from getting into the intake but most have shown a drastic increase in IATs over stock. Of course, they're also ingesting slightly more air so HP-wise it is usually a wash, or a slight increase (when cold) with a CAI. I've decided to stick with my ugly black box, it seems to be doing a good enough job for me.

Compare your V6 box with a GT; if the GT's is a little bigger it might be a real nice upgrade for your car and I'm pretty sure you can find one for cheap (free?) from someone that installed a CAI.

Since both engines use the same part number air filter, I would guess there is not much difference in the airboxes

Did you tune it with that panel filter?

From my reading the stock box is pretty good and the ram air function seems to help at highway speeds. I just installed a K&N drop in filter. It seemed to pick a few SoTP HP and MPGs went up as well. The Volant CAI are real nice, but they have yet to come out with a CAI for the '11/12's, maybe because the stock box works pretty good.

Where did you get the filter from?

Maybe, but I wouldn't necessarily assume that.

Picked it up at Oriellys or Vatozone, it was like $50.00ish

Most of the 13 HP comes from the tuning you have to do when you swap the intake out ,,,

I took the time to open up the stock airbox, & follow the factory air duct. The air duct is 2.5" by 6.75" & goes straight the core support & pulls air from beside the headlight. Only a gentle curve & no obstructions.

If you cut out the solid plastic honeycomb at the left side ofthe grill, you'll have a functional ram air system.

The factory setup is well designed & needs no replacement
