  • Cleaning a rusted fuel tank

I got a tank that is fine on the outside, but rusted on the inside. I'm thinking about getting this thing acid washed and coated, but have never had this done before.

    Anybody had experience with this?

    Thanks!

Take it to Al's Radiator shop off Hwy 10 in Hurst. He will fix you up.

There are ways to do it yourself, but it's a pain in the arse and filthy work.

This tank is out of one of a pair of matching 1970 Torino Cobras w/ 429 Cobra Jet and close ratio Top Loader! The car hasn't run in nearly 30 years and only has about 22k miles.

How long does that coating last? I've read reviews both ways...

You got a line on a good one cheaper than $400? This is a budget project to get the old beast running. Resto will come later...

As a temporary fix, I drained mine, then blasted it with a power washer, then used the blower function on my vacuum to dry it. I know it wont last, but it buys me time until I can get a new tank.

This temporary fix needs to last about a year or two. The car wont be driven a lot and will have the gas tank kept full as much as possible.

I really appreciate the feedback from everyone!!!

Dump what you can, put diesel in it with some gravel. Shake like hell. Rinse, lather, repeat.

I used a short piece of chain rather than gravel, shook then repeat... several times.
