  • Wiped out cam lobe in roller motor?

Whats the chance of that happening? I ask because the 302 had a noisy lifter issue before I swapped in new lifters. I ran it about 30 mins with good (50psi) oil pressure. Ended up pulling the heads and the car sat for a couple months up till now. Bolted a set of stock heads on and tightened the rockers down and one didn't snug down on the pushrod which happens to be on the same side that was noisy before. I'm at a crossroads since I lack the upper intake, and front accessories from having the motor done or pull it down and check the cam. 30mins of run time suffient? 2months sitting play a role in this?

I wouldn't think the cam would go flat on a roller motor. I'd imagine the lifter is the problem, swap it with another and see if the problem stays in the same place or moves with the lifter.

    Hope that helps.

Could also be that it's in the event of a closed valve.

I'm not sure about roller cams, but with a flat tappet it can go flat in a matter of seconds.

oh yea, seen it happen quite a few times on sbc's

I have also seen all the dog bones break and that let the roller lifters spin causing you know what...awesome carnage

a lifter could have lost it's oil

[QUOTE=Txstang1;651571]what weight oil is in it now ?[/QUOTE

use a 1/4" socket taped to a extension and a drill to turn the oil pump and get oil pressure, crank the motor over a few times while it has oil pressure, see if that fixes the lifter.

I've run straight 50 in my motor since it was built 2.5 years ago. This winter I decided to throw some 40 in it since it was cooler out. That caused the lifters to not fully pump up. Put 50 back in it, problem solved.

I think if you run thick oil the lifters get used to/worn to that oil and a then they don't like a lighter weight oil. That's all I could figure with my situation.

Got in this morning and get outside to prime the oil system and manage to drop the oil pump drive rod into the oil pan. Fucking glorious, days like today make me question why I work on stuff

                    OH SHIT!!!

Sorry about your luck, I have done shit like that before and you just got to step back for a while and collect yourself and not tear something up in rage

Use a magnetic pick-up tool and a bright led flashlight and try to get it out

Suck-sess! Got the drive rod in and spun it for little bit, and sure enough the lifter/pushrod/rocker arm firmed up as it oozed oil out the top. Thanks Jyro
