  • Best quality gasket set for 302?

There are lots of differing gasket opinions out there. I'm interested in hearing your opinion on what works best.

My criteria - straight forward installation & NO leaks.

The car is my 1984 Mustang. The engine is a SEFI 5.0 from a 1989 Mustang. Both cars are factory AOD cars. I've had the SEFI engine out of the car just sitting in my garage for several years now. I plan to put it in the 1984 in the next few weeks. Prior to doing so, I am going to replace all of the gaskets, rattle can the engine & brackets, and clean all of the accessories as much as possible. It won't be a show car but it will be neat and somewhat clean.

The 1989 engine came from a running car that was wrecked. No straight body panels. Bent frame. Good running engine / transmission.

My preference would be to purchase a overhaul gasket set but I would purchase piecemeal if that is required to have a leak free engine. I want gaskets that will last a long time with no leakage.

I wasn't planning on replacing the rear main seal but after consideration, I think that I should go ahead and do so.

I wasn't planning on taking the heads off either but may do so just to know that I have fresh headgaskets also. Engine has stock E7's.

I am going to use the "Powered by Ford" stock valvecovers from the '84 engine unless there is some reason they will not work with the later engine.

Engine is completely stock with the exception of Hooker shorties that will be going on. I do not want to have exhaust leaks.

The car will be driven regularly and possibly as a daily for a while. Mildly spirited driving only.

Share your thoughts on quality gaskets.

Yes, sir. Doesn't Felpro make more than one type of gasket?

I get it. I haven't ordered any 302 gaskets in about 10 years. The modular & northstar engines have spoiled me on gasket integrity. I was hoping there was a list somewhere of which gaskets were preferred for each part.

          Thank you for your input.
