  • OBDII Code Scanner

Does anyone have a portable code scanner? Is there anything to stay away from when buying one. I see several in the sub $30 range. I would imagine with a handheld that just reads the codes from the computer, there isn't much that could go wrong. Do they all have the ability to clear the codes?

Can't you clear codes by unhooking the battery?

you can, but then you have to re-set every thing.

I've got a few different issues, and would like the option to re-set the codes without having to go through the trouble.

the $30 dollar one will just show the code. Then you can get online to see what the code means. the higher dollar ones give you possible reasons why the code is up. The cheap ones are able to erase the code. I believe there are 4 buttons, up and down and erase and read lol

Cool. I don't mind looking the codes up. I've had several issues with this truck. It saves a lot of time and headache if I don't have to go somewhere to get the codes ran.

lol. I've had a laundry list of problems with this truck. One of which was an evap system leak after I replaced the fuel pump the first time. Just replaced the fuel pump a second. The first replacement lasted less than 70K miles. I need to have the computer re-programmed to eliminate the second 02 sensor, I know that code is in there, however, there is no telling what other codes this damn thing has registered.

I've got one similar to this: http://www.harborfreight.com/automot...enu-98568.html

                Use a 20% off...

Make sure it's CAN for newer vehicles...

has anyone used a pc interface? I've seen several in the $20-30 range that allow you to view tps, fuel system, timing, etc.

Most of those I've seen don't have a CAN interface. I have a cheaper Cornwell one that's decent for just checking codes and erasing them I don't use it since we no longer have a Cornwell dealer to update it.

Right now Im definitely looking for under $100. even if I end up with a basic scan/clear handheld. I just dropped $600 puting a fuel pump in my truck. I'm far from dfwm baller status!

An Elm327 Bluetooth scanner and the Torque app of Android works good.
