Sounds like the starter gear is impacting the flywheel, and not twisting to engage into the teeth. I had a starter do this once, and if the teeth were not allinged 100% it wouldnt grab and spin.

I hear two clicks. Is the second click as soon as you let off the key? If you held it at start for say, a second or two, would the second click not come until you back off the key? If so that is exactly the issue I'm describing. The little gear is thrusting out, hitting the flywheel, which is the noise you here, and the second click is it pulling back in.

If you need to move it, turn the engine just a touch to help the gears align, and i bet it will start.

Ok I got side tracked at the junk yard today but have since hitting back on the tahoe. There was two bolts holding it in place. I removed those as well as the 3 nuts holding the wires on. Problem is that feels like something inside the tranny is holding it in preventing me from removing it. Is this a possibility or am I overlooking something or doing something wrong?

Remove that black plastic dust cover. A 10mm headed bolt holds it on.

Dont let the starter hit you in the head when you remove the bolt.

Lol. I'm alive. We finally got it out with a special tool: beer. Parts stores were closed so i'll be back out there today putting it on. Anything special or just bolt it back up?

Have the battery disconnected while you're installing it.
