  • TV cable questions

Ive got this tuned close i think but I have a few questions. (I know the proper way is to use some sort of gauge. I dont have that option at the moment) its a Lokar TV cable attached to a Holley 4160 600cfm carb. Trans is a AOD that was rebuilt and a mild shift kit installed.
    1. When matting the gas when cruising at, say 45 mph, it should drop into 2nd or 1st gear correct? It doesn't like kicking down past one gear Ive noticed. if in 3rd gear and you mat the gas, itll only touch 2nd. THat a TV adjustment or something else?
    2. When accelerating hard from a dead stop, the trans will stay in 1st gear only till about 4100-4200 rpms before shifting. Regardless of how hard the gas is matted.
The transmission does NOT slip or give any indication of going bad. Shifts like it should when cruising or getting on it, it just seems to not be shifting when it should.
Currently I have the Lokar cable adjusted to where there is no slack in the cable. I believe that any more adjustment (tightness of cable) would bottom it out when at WOT.

I want to say the last one I adjusted was the cable pulled out .040 and 35psi of tv pressure at idle in park. I didn't have a gauge so I just used the side of a zip tie as a gauge. Shoot me a pm if you need more in depth help

I made one small adjustment tonight and it shifted great... Granted it still does not up shift into anything more then one gear (I.e. mat gas, shifts from 3rd to 2nd).

And other question about the shifter. The indicator on it is off. As well as where "1" should be. Once u put the shifter past N, it gets misaligned. Indicator is pointing to the bottom of OD when in overdrive, indicator is pointing at the bottom of D when in Drive, and 1 is weird. Feels like it doesn't fully "seat" into that gear. The shifter bottoms out before it gets into gate 1. How do I adjus the shifter/linkage/cable or whatever it is to make it have aligned, positive shifts into gears?

Couple other quick things. The shifting is very tight, or tough. Meaning, it is a chore (compared to other AOD shifters I've played with) to shift it. Feels gummed up?
Secondly, only at a dead stop can I shift it into 1 (while holding the shifter down firmly), punch it, and manual shift it through the gears. I know this has to all be a linkage/cable adjustment. Help a Brotha out!

Take it to a trans shop so they can adjust it before you burn it up?

              1. Are you trying to break the input shaft? If you do a lot of forced kickdowns you will do so even if your engine is stock. Earlier AOD's are more prone to this. Yes, I learned this the hard way with my 165hp CFI '84 back when it was just beyond the warranty mileage.

              2. I'm not completely sure but I think that you need an A or A+ servo to change the shiftpoint.
