  • More Fuel System Issues

Long story short, I've got a 2003 RCSB, 2.2L 5 spd. It has 160xxx miles on it. Replaced fuel pump/sending unit at ~90K. Replaced part of the injector harness at 125K, and just this past spring 145-150K I had the head replaced to fix what I thought was a burned valve. Turns out it was a bad injector on #1. A month or so later, I run out of gas at 200 miles. I calculate the fuel mileage and I'm getting ~21mpg which is just about normal for this truck running like it should. For some reason, it wont use the last 6 gallons in the tank, I can prime the pump/lines repeatedly and it will fire. Fast forward to today, Truck died a 145 miles, primed the lines and it started and got it home. I've been noticing some flat spots, originally around 3500rpm when it would feel like it was bogging and not getting enough fuel. Driving home tonight, it started to bog and I noticed if I stuck my foot in the pedal it felt like it was going to die. I'm thinking the fuel pump is about to go out again, any insight?

Oh, Fuel pump was replaced 12-15 months ago and I'm running a "test pipe" in place of the cat.

I used to see a similar problem with the dodge trucks and vans from the mid 90's. The corrugated plastic tube going from the fuel pump to the top of the pump hat would get a pin hole in it somewhere and affect the running. As long as the fuel level was about the leak it would run pretty normal but as the level got below it, it would act like it was running out. Sounds like you've got some sort of problem in the tank.

What pump are you running? Ac delco is the recommended o e. I'd put this up on s10forum.com and see what they say.

Well, the pump failed before I could replace it. It now sits at a shop waiting for parts. You cant just buy a pump for these things. You have to buy the pump/sending unit as a module. How much does it cost you ask? Well, I've got a flex fuel truck, meaning it will run e85 if I wanted too. Thanks to my dad, I can get it at cost. $340. Might as well change the fuel filter along with it too, right? GM did this wonderful little thing with the flex fuel 2.2L trucks, they integrated the fuel pressure regulator into the fuel filter, pretty nifty huh? Until you need to replace one $60. Then add labor to that as I don't have the facilities to remove the bed or drop the tank, $200. So $600 later, I should have my truck back next week. Seriously thinking about fixing the couple of minor issues and selling it. /rant

Got my truck back today. Seems a laundry list of problems was caused by the fuel pump module coming apart. the top plate separated from the module, finally what happened, was the module was just floating around in the tank, tethered by one of the corrugated tubes to the mounting plate. Not sure if it was caused by some negligence from the shop that replaced the first one, or if I just got a bad part. There are two aluminum tubes that connect the two halves, basically, the tubes just came out of the mounting plate
