use wd-40 (linseed oil) and a heavy gauge steel wool
works wonders, I'm cleaning a lot of soot off 2 two complete diesel engines

Transmission fluid soaked rags softened it up so that a small razor blade just peeled it away. It wasn't as thick as I originally thought. I just wanted the valve reliefs super clean for these 2.05 valves, ans .040 more lift.

Back in the day,when I pulled my heads and swapped stuff out,my pistons and valves always looked GOOD.
Just put it back together and then spray it,175 dry shot never hurt a thing.

I have heard of people using oven cleaner to get pistons clean

Oven cleaner and aluminum pistons is bad juju!!!

Get some top engine cleaner and put it on the pistons. It needs to cover the tops completely so you may only be able to do a few at a time. Let it sit for about 2 hours. Hand turn it a few times to let it spill out and it should wipe right off.

We do this are the dealership on LS style engines when they get covered up.
