  • Why would a pinon nut back off?

These gears were just set up, and it's been making a wicked howl since about day one. I haven't pulled the gears out yet, but I did get the driveshaft off and the pinon nut was so loose I could tighten it some w/ my fingers!

What holds the pinon nut snug?

Are my gears going to be trashed when I pull this apart?

Either it never was tight or the old nut was reused.

Re-using the lock nut for one . Not having the bearing race set all the way is another . And finally leaving the preload too lose and the bearings wearing crazy fast . Thats all that I can think of that will leave you with a loose pinion , now back to my beer .

id bet money that the crush sleeve was re-used and or preload was not set.
And yes, dont use those gears again.

if you know what's going on, a crush collar and a new nut is not necessary. i set rotational pre-load and tack weld the nut.

I took it to a guy who specializes in those, and he ran down the nut ( a new one he had) & determined that it needed a new crush collar. He's taking it apart today, and he'll have back to me today. I'll update.

Don called me this morning to say that the reason the collar had crushed beyond where it was supposed to is b/c the bearing that's pressed on the pinon gear had become loose & was sliding around.

Ninja edit? send me a pm if you want.

He called again to say that b/c the old one had started to move, he doubted a new one would press on (wear on the pinon shaft?) & stick, so he's going to try to shim it.

Ultimately, he says my driving style will continue to break parts. I don't do hole shots or 6K dumps, but I do roll in to the throttle & break the 33's loose on occasion.
