  • new engine break in

    I just installed a new engine in my '02 Explorer, it's a 6cyl. 4.0.

I'm currently trying to prime the oil sys. shop manual states that I have to disable the ignition and fuel systems, remove spark plugs, and crank vehicle until I see oil press at the gauge. how long should I crank before I see press at the gauge? I've cranked it over a few times already but don't want to push it. the first time I cranked it I did it for a bout 10sec. I did it a few more times after that. the last time I did it I held the key for almost a minute and still no reading at the gauge. any thoughts?

not sure about that one, but some cars will kill the gauges while cranking. As long as the engine was coated good with assembly lube during the build up, you should be good to start it without a prime. I hate not being able to prime one like the old distributor drive days. You should have pressure within the first 10 or 15 seconds of initial startup, if not then you might start getting worried.

well, here's the thing. I'm sure it was lubed well, but it sat in the garage for almost a year before I installed it last month.

you may not ever see op. Ive had them where I disconnected coils/inj and spun even with an engine start option charger and never saw op. Some things just wont spin fast enough. Fire it up. If you dont see op quickly, then worry.

no distributor, so no hole to use a primer
