  • I'm looking at burning up two sets of brake pads ($400) and about $1k in fuel plus tires at the next race we go to. We might get another race out of the tires.

I don't think anyone discounts how expensive road racing is.

I am not trying to bust out a ruler here and compare who's is bigger, who spends more, etc. The point of my post was that I have a threshold and it has been met, I am at the point that the ET line and the $ line have intersected. To go faster I will have to spend more money then I want to spend (even if that is far less then other folks are spending). I like to race at least every other weekend, if I am dropping 500 bucks per outing that just doesn't jive well with my budget. Others pain threshold is much greater, some is much lower, my car is a pretty inexpensive car to race in the grand scheme of things. (couple of gallons of 93, a little methanol, tires every once in a while, oil changes, etc, the breakage/upgrading is where the real money is).

I don't think he's comparing anything with a ruler, or who spends more but made his post more for comparison's sake.

One of the cars I work on, I don't think has been apart in 2 years. It runs pretty consistent 5.30's...but requires race gas etc.

I wasn't trying to be rude (DJ is a cool guy and I am sure that was his intent), but comparing the budget for road racing to a street/strip car that likes to hit test and tune sessions every other week is a no brainer. I think for the most part the road race guys (or at least those whom are not made of money) don't race quite as often since the cost per session is so much higher (at least I would have to limit my sessions if I were road racing).

That's awesome, another reason I like when you chime in, you don't always (or ever) say what I want to hear, but I know that your intention is to steer me towards the setup/parts/etc. that will last and stay together, it is sometimes hard for my race budget to keep up.

Don't take that the wrong way, it was more of a "you gotta pay to play" statement.

Oh, I know, guess I am just having an expensive week and am complaining, all told I'll have dropped close to $2.5-3k by the time this week is over.

man, i've come up through the ranks so to speak.. from a slow car, to a normal car to a fast car and back around the block a few times - so I try not to mention something I haven't tried, wouldn't try, or haven't tested on someone elses car.

I'll be the first to admit, I've screwed up a lot of shit 'testing' - but I've also been pretty damn successful too.

Some things, like trans lines, coolers and related components on a turbo car can't be skimped on and have very costly and dangerous consequences of something fails at the most inopportune time...

I would MUCH rather overbuild then to brake parts, have fires, faulty wiring, or maybe worst case - wreck.

I guess my problem is I am teetering somewhere between normal car and fast car and finding out I am not ready to spend fast car dollars

                    • James you are doing just fine. You are also trying to be responsible and stay within your budget.........a lot of people can't do that. It does not matter how much you spend, there is always someone faster. I don't like spending money on my car either but I am fairly stubborn and don't like to fail. A large amount of the money spent on my car last year was just trying to work out the bugs on the car because it was all new. We also went through three 55 gallon drums of C16 last year. However, we went down the track a LOT of times. There was a 8 week stretch that Brooks and I were at the track testing 3 days a week!!! People are quick to say "man, your car runs good" but we put the time in to get it there. Your car is very similar to mine as they were both built in our garage and not by some shop. I know I am proud of the final result and Brooks should be as well.

If it was easy........everyone would have a fast car!!!!!

Thanks Rick, I realized after the cruise that some folks on here relate to not being able to just drop money like it is nothing, or having tons of background in fabrication/tuning/etc. Lots of folks came up to me after the 5.85 and congratulated me and they knew I busted my ass on it, they knew I didn't just pay someone for a number. I know I didn't set the land on fire or anything, but it was a proud moment for me and I really appreciated that others noticed. Now I just gotta get back out there with the glide and prove to the skeptics (Sam) that it wasn't some miracle/fluke/moons in alignment run!

                              • 4L60 is cheaper than a 4L80 by a little bit. An if you want to sell it, it will be a bit easier to sell if needed because you can change the bell housing for whatever you need.
