  • 2004 passat

I am up in grand prairie visiting my girlfriend until monday morning when i will fly back to abilene. She drives a 2004 Volkswagen Passat with a 1.8L turbo. She was trying to teach another girl how to drive a standard as her car is a five speed and the girl stalled the engine and when she started it back up it had a hell of a dead miss. I took it down to Vatozone and they pulled the codes. Pulled out:
    p0300
    p0301
    p0302
    p0304
    p0171

It seems weird to me that there is no p0303. So far I have figured that the p0171 lean fuel system code is the cause of the misfire codes. Has anyone of the gurus on here had this problem? Any suggestions? As I said I am visiting my girlfriend and am 3 hrs away from all of my tools in abilene. Any help would be just dandy.

Funny you ask. I just had a similar issue with my wife's 03 passat 1.8t. I sent countless hours and money on this damn misfire. Ended up being a small vacuum plastic vortex housing thing... I replaced this with a hose joiner (plastic tubular housing used to join rubber hoses) and bam! fixed.
**Items replaced before I discovered real issue**
    1. Valve Cover gasket
    2. All 4 coils (cylinder 4 I replaced twice)
    3. All 4 spark plugs (cylinder 4 I replaced twice)
    4. unplugged battery for 30 minutes to attempt a code reset.

When you look at the back of your engine (between the engine and firewall) youll see the mess of vacuum hoses. They will be joined by a plastic cylinder looking piece. Each side of the housing will have those annoying single use hose clamps. Inspect all of them. Mine had cracked on a seam. If your close to Keller, I could take a gander at it for ya. Im no mechanic, but I had just fixed this escapade on my wifes passat last month.

Your welcome, I hope I helped! During this funny little episode, I for sure wanted to "set if on fire and roll it off a cliff WHILE shooting it with my SWAT rifle!"
