  • Tips on getting turbo spool times down?

    Looking through the logs of my best run I think I see why my trap speed and E.T. don't match (6.13@117mph).

    My turbo is taking a long time to get up to speed. I left with just under 4psi on the 2 step set at 3200rpm (tried moving that up rpm wise the next run to get more boost out of the hole but ended up spinning).

    On that run (leaving at just under 4psi) it took 2 seconds of the 6 second run to get to full boost (13psi). Once the turbo gets moving obviously it is doing a pretty good job pushing me down the track, but I've got to figure out a way to get the turbo spooled up quicker.

    I know a t-brake would probably help this, as well as a high end boost controller, but I am looking more to timing techniques and fueling. Possibly a little nitrous oxide just out of the hole?

    Try to add some timing and fuel in that area.

      smaller intercooler, smaller turbo... big turbo = big power = turbo lag.

      That said, make the wastegate stiffer (so it's slower to open). There are then two schools of thought... lean spool (so it burns hot as hell, causing the turbo to spool faster [this is what I did on my Evo]) and rich spool (again, hot). You will have to fiddle with timing on both to make sure you're not knocking.

      When I went to E85, my spool dropped a few hundred rpm as well (we also leaned it out and increased timing which were the likely causes of the increase spool). TONS more power too

          You should be able to leave on more than 3200 rpm. If you can get the suspension dialed in, 36-3800 launch rpm will help. Keep your timing up as long as you can.

              Pour the fuel to it and pull a dick load of timing out of it.



              edit: make that 2 dick loads

                Yep, alot of fuel and pull timing. This shoud happen when you are on the transbrake, if you had one.

                      if the motor is to small for the turbo, it will take anti~lag map's. not to many turbo guys with the boom ball's for nitrous around here, buncha scared vagina's!

                          co2, more timing, less timing, more fuel, less fuel, converter. You should be able to build 95% of your boost on the footbrake. Once you go to your t-brake, you better have it reaady to go, cause the lights are coming down. You will find that REALLY good back brakes are important for this very reason.

                          Each car is different, I spool both of my cars differently.

                            I always heard less timing and less fuel. More heat, and the later burn allows more of the heat to reach the turbo.

                              The turbo is fine, what you are doing is fine - but has it's limits.

                              Footbraking is the whole 'problem' and the time it takes to reach X rpm (where it makes decent boost) is the goal. So, leaving with more RPM is the next step. 3200 is NOTHING. You have a couple of choices. You can proportion the brakes to the rear more so that it spools higher without pushing the car (if the brakes holding the car still is even a problem).. or you can devise a way to hold the gate SHUT for about 1 second.

                              Every turbo car does what you're describing, it's how you control it is what matters. I think a couple of the replies are based on building boost BEFORE you launch, your question revolves around building boost AFTER the car is moving...

                              You can do what you are after with about 100$ worth of parts and no nitrous.
