I'd say burnt valve based on the spark plug and what you're saying, but I'd do a compression test to be sure and bring #3 up on TDC and put air in the cylinder to confirm this.

you can get 2.3 heads on ebay for cheap already rebuilt.

or just buy another 2.3 head and run it... i just saw one in a yard over the weekend.
Your local VW parts Master.....need a part?

EDIT: Just did a compression test on Number 3 and gauge barely moved. So Anyone got a 2.3 head with with spark ports in good shape laying around????

I think I have one I'd let go for $50. I won't be able to get it until Monday afternoon though. It came off of a running 2.5 motor from a '00 Ranger.

Would it fit directly on the 2.3? Along with all the spots the brackets go onto??

It should be the same, but you may want to dig around on the internets. Try www.therangerstation.com or you can just put your old head right up next to the one I have to see.

Well All that was wrong with this one is that one valve. So i might not need the head. We'll see.

Get the head fixed, and drive it another 100k easily. I love the 93-97 rangers. I have had a lot of them. They run great.

One thing that pissing me off is that i cant get one of the fuel lines off. Ive got the tool but it looks like its not releasing the spring inside. Any other way of getting it off? Trying to get the intake plenum off so i can clean it.
