  • 03 Expedition, water in oil

2003 4.6 Expedition. I've got water in the oil. A few people I've talked to don't think it's a head gasket. But none of them have looked at or worked on it. Someone mentioned it could possibly be the gasket for the oil cooler, where they are mixing. After googling, Ford says they all are equipped with engine oil coolers, but some people on message boards claim their Expeditions don't have them. I also ran across a few people thay replaced the head gaskets, only to have milky oil again within a week. Consensus seems to be that the cast piece the filter threads on to is the cooler. Someone mentioned small radiator hoses going to that piece. I crawled up under it, and the cast piece does have radiator hoses going to it, but they are large. One is probably 1 1/2" and the other a 3/4". Cast piece has 5 blots that I can see, and bolts directly to the block. Can any of you confirm that is the cooler? It is leaking some oil right there, which tells me there is at least a minimal gasket problem there. Anyone have any experience with this? All my experience has been with a remote mount oil cooler.

The SVT Cobras have have this as well, it is a water/oil cooler. I've never heard of them cracking but you never know. It comes off pretty easy and im sure you can get the gaskets at NAPA. Once you take it aprt you can see if it is cracked or leaking. A lot cheaper than doing head gaskets or motor rebuild.

The Mark VIII's can leak oil or water or mix it at the "oil filter adapter" gasket. This piece bolts onto the block and the oil filter screws onto. I think I remember there being 5 8mm bolts that hold it on last time I replace one. I don't know if the Expeditions have this or not.

I wont know until I get it off if it's cracked or not. I assume a gasket failure could cause seepage of the water to the oil though, even if there is no crack.

On another note though, I thought it was strange that the oil in the pan was milky, and the oil in the filter was straight oil (no water).

Ive seen those gaskets leak before, just a gasket with some raised neoprene around the oil /water passages. I don't recall a mixing problem, just external leaks, but it is possible, tho i'd think there would be oil in coolant with the difference in pressure. Worth a shot b4 messing with the heads.

I've got a gasket for the oil filter adapter if you need one. It's been said, but start there first. Coolant does run through the adapter. The lower hose and the coolant degas bottle hose attach to it.

I fucked with it for a few hours, and I don't have the patience for this shit anymore. I'm taking it to Paul.

The oil cooler technically isn't an oil cooler; it's a heater. They are only for emissions.

You have the right thing and yes they are a pain in the fucking ass to change. Also yes, they can cause oil water mixing.

So coolant is hotter than engine oil?
