  • Towing a 99 expedition with my burban

I will be towing my brothers expedition with my 01 5.3l 4wd suburban. Just wondering if it's too much weight. Will be using haul car hauler.

survey says you will spend more on gas for your suburban than you would pay a transport service.

Do you mean a tow dolly? No way in hell I would tow that far with a dolly.

While he be pushing it, fuel will run under $.50 a mile, but wear and tear is harto calculate. I bet cheapest he can get it shipped is in $1.40+ range a mile due to size of vehicle.

              I wouldn't even attempt that.

Take the extra insurance from Uhaul, and make sure your insurance policy will cover you on top of that. You don't want to be out of pocket when one of the tires on the car hauler comes apart in New Mexico, and all three items are wrecked.

                  ^^^^ Agreed.

For one thing, if you are using a U-Haul car trailer, or to dolly, they are not even close to being rated for that much weight the last I checked. If you do manage to get the Expedition on that trailer, now you have another problem which is stopping. The U-Haul trailers have surge brakes, which I would not trust to save my life. I am not saying they are all bad. Hell, I was using those trailers to haul my car around to the track before I picked up an open car hauler, but, I have more faith in electric controlled brakes than surge style.

And that leads into another reason I would not haul the Expedition with your set up. Sure, you probably have to the power to pull, but how about the ability to stop? At minimum, I would use a 3/4 ton to haul the Expedition from Arlington to Cali. I know guys use half ton trucks to tow all kinds of stuff as big, or bigger than what you are looking at, and they do so without any issues.

I would be nervous as hell overloading a U-Haul trailer / tow dolly with that much weight, then using a half ton to pull it and stop it all the way from TX to CA.

Just my opinion though so take it for what its worth.

Towed my Trans am on a uhaul trailer to California with a 5.3 z71. The hills were a nightmare with that much weight (high altitude on i40) and stopping was crap. I'd imagine it being significantly worse with another ton back there.

You'll be hating life when you get into altitude with that load. And I'd add a big external tranny oil cooler just for extra insurance, if it doesn't already have one.

I gotta agree. Like most here I've hauled lots of stuff in my day, but no way on earth i'd try what you're talking about doing here.
