  • should i replace the water pump at 120k?

i'm taking my little kia for a new timing belt/drive belts and was curious if i should spend the extra money now for a new water pump? i am replacing the timing belt every 60k as per the service manual due to it being an interference engine, so if i still have it i plan on changing it again at 180k. there are no signs of it going bad but i know they can start leaking or go bad in a second

should i go ahead and replace it now or do water pumps normally last 180-200k?

    thanks

i know nothing about most engines, and even less about kia engines, but if its gonna be that far apart i would prolly go ahead a do it man.
i imagine it would wind up saving you a lot of time and possibly a little $$$

that's what i'm thinking paul. i personally don't know much about FWD engines but i would imagine that the water pump would be located around the timing belt(hell you might even have to remove the t-belt just to get to the water pump) so it would save a little bit of $$ in labor. but if it's on the other side of the engine and they last 200k then i'll just wait

I'd say if you're that deep into it and it's easy to replace, might as well at this point. I would spend the money on an OEM part.

oh yea, when it comes to vital parts like the timing belt(interference engine) i stick with OEM. i only go cheap on stuff that doesn't matter like batteries and brake pads

Any time I do a t-belt on a FWD motor I go ahead and replace the water pump, tensioners, and idlers while I am in there. Might be overkill, but a lot of the time the water pump is driven by the t-belt and I really don't want to have to go back in there any time soon. Shouldn't cost much at all to add it to the list.

Replace it with a brand new waterpump, its game to go out anytime. Also inspect cam seals and front crankshaft seals. The clown i work for won't let me change idlers and tensioner bearings unless they are bad, but if you can afford it, change them, they don't last forever, and almost no extra in labor to change.

I fixed this dumb broads 2.2 camry last monday, it broke the timing belt, we tried to talk her into the wp change, but nope....Take a guess what i changed on it Friday.
