  • Rear Axle Swap

What is involved in swaping the rear axle out of a 94 into a 93 fox body?

I know they have to be removed, but will it require removal and re-installation of brackets (cutting welding/fabrication) specific to the fox, or will one out of a 94 bolt right in?

It will bolt right in no mods needed. It will be about 1/2 inch wider but that's about it.

I just did the 93 to 94 swap. The 94 axles are longer to accomodate the disc brakes and ABS ring. The 94 axle has a notch in the flange where the ABS sensor goes through. The 94 has an additional hole where the brake line bracket bolts on the shock mount. If you are retaining the disc brake setup then there should be no problem to bolt it in as long as you use the 94 brake lines. The rear wheels will be 3/4" farther out on each side. If you are retaining the drum brakes then you will need to swap the axles and brake end plates and hardware. You will want to use the drum brake lines as well. I don't think you will need to grind or drill on the housing at all. While you have the axles out you should check them to see if the bearings have worn rough spots. I would recommend replacing the bearings in the 94 axle and using axle saver bearings if necessary. Be sure to put some silicone on the outside of the seal between the seal and the axle tube. I've had all kinds of problems with leaks from between the seal and the tube.

          Steps:
          buy the axle
          walk up to your car
jack your car up 9brace it properly etc)
beginning throwing the axle at the car at a 60* angle until it pops into place
this takes 1-2 hrs, throw it very hard
