  • 1989 349ci MP T-70 Turbo Mustang Build

So after some thought I decided to go ahead post some pics of my turbo build. I never did this before because honestly there was so much time in between updates I figure what's the point. Plus I did not think too many would care about a little ol turbo street car build. Anyways I have managed to collect a few pics of what I have done or had done to this point so hopefully it will keep the thread somewhat interesting.

I bought this car with the intent of it being a weekend cruiser that could be a daily if I wanted it to be one. It originally had a 302 in it with a Powerdyne on it. It also had some upgrades such as heads, cam, yada yada yada. It started and ran when I bought it but needed some work because it would not really idle well and it would die if you let out of the gas.

I got it running a little better and was going to cruise around with the supercharger for a little while but I had a guy that was interested in it so I sold it. That gave me the money that I needed to go buy one of the BG Turbo Kits. It was supposed to be a quick swap over but we all know how those quick swaps usually end up.

Since I was putting the turbo kit on I figured there was no sense it putting on that old motor. I had a brand new motor that I had built for another car with the intent to turbocharg that I sold as a roller. It was a 349ci low compression motor. It has a Sportsman block, nodular iron crank, I beam rods, and some DSS Max Quench pistons. I used to have a bunch of pics of the motor but I can seem to find them. All I got is it sitting in my old car. I also had some pics of the turbo but I think they are wherever my motor pics are. If I find them later I will post them.

Here it is with most of the turbo kit installed.

Now they say this kit fits with all of the factory accessories except a smog pump. I guess they are right for the most part but it is a PITA with everything in place. The 3.5" down pipe just barley fits and it only fits after I took the AC Dryer off its mount and pulled it to the left about as far as I could. The Power steering fit as well but I was not very comfortable witht crossover pipe being so close to the lines that I went ahead and put a Flaming River rack in it.

Here is a look at the down pipe from underneath. As you can see it uses up every bit of availible space I have down there in order to fit.

One of the problems I had to deal with on this car was my oil return coming off the turbo. The kit I had made for the other car was a drives side mount kit and this one is obviously a passenger side mount. Well I had already tapped my oil pan on the drivers side for the return. So I was left with patching that hole and relocating the tap to the other side, or find a way to get the return line to the driver's side. I went with option 2. Only time will tell if this design will not work but I feel pretty confident that it will do fine.

Here are a couple of pics of things you don't normally see or talk about. To help keep the fuel on the fire I'm running 50lb injectors.

And to help regulate everything I'm running the Pro Flow mass air meter.

That A/C line sure is close to that downpipe..I am running mine through the fenderwell as far away from that pipe as possible

wow this is my old car. i bought it from an old geezer at work when it was completely stock. i did most the mods on it so let me know if you have any questions. it was my first mustang. good to see it again...i miss her. i embarrassed so many "faster" cars in it. one thing you may not realize is that it has (or at least had) a torsen differential!

Yeah the AC line is going to get some work. I had the car running for a little while before doing a tranny swap on it. The AC line running along the frame rail got to hot from the header being right next to it and blew a hole in it. Its not a top priority to fix it at the moment but when I get to it I will most likely have mine running through the fend as well.

Yeah it was a tuff call. I'm hoping it works because honestly putting on the other side does not look ideal either.

The MSD 6 BTM will tucked nice and neat under the drivers seat.
