You answered yor own question. At one point people DID consider them junk and threw them away.
They are more scarce now so prices have gone up.

I've scrapped several. I would assume they are becoming harder to find removed from a car.

I've got one with all suspension attached and one that is k member only. I'm not really sure why I haven't scrapped them yet.

I went thru this with my pontiac stuff - it went from generally available to hard to find to unobtainium. These foxes are getting older and older and soon some of the stuff that people used to rip off and throw away will be fetching top dollar from people trying to restore one - stock airbox silencer, anyone? Emissions stuff? Just wait and see
