  • Trickle Chargers and Optima batteries....

The Optima instructions say to make sure your charger is safe for AGM batteries. I always keep a battery tender hooked up when I am not driving my 65. I have searched and can not find out if the battery tender is safe for Optima batteries.

    Does anybody know?

I have the Battery Tender Plus 12 V 1.25 Amp.

Probably depends on which battery tender/trickle charger you have..

        6. Use Battery Tender® Junior and Plus Chargers for charging
lead-acid batteries only. They are not intended to supply power to an
extra low-voltage electrical system or to charge dry-cell batteries.
Charging dry-cell batteries may cause them to burst and cause injury to
        persons and damage to property;
        INFORMATION NOTE ABOUT DRY-CELL BATTERIES:
There are some wet, non-spillable, lead acid batteries on the market whose
manufacturers' make the claim that they are dry-cell batteries. These batteries
are sealed, gas-recombinant, starved electrolyte, possibly with AGM
(Absorbed Glass Mat) type construction. It is perfectly safe to use Battery
Tender® Junior and Plus Chargers to charge these types of batteries. The
dry-cell battery warning is intended for rechargeable or non-rechargeable
alkaline and other similar types of batteries. If you have any doubt about the
type of battery that you have, please contact the battery manufacturer before
        attempting to charge the battery.

I have used one on my Cobra with red top for 5+ years.
Most people wait until the battery is low/dead before trying to maintain it properly. If the battery has been low already, it may be too late to save it. You want to ALWAYS connect the maintainer when you are done using the vehicle not 2 weeks later.

Hearing from others that they have done it with success makes me much more comfortable. These Optimas aren't cheap.

If you go down to about the 14th post they start talking about battery tenders and Optima batteries.

I have the one I posted in your other thread and it has worked flawlessly for over a year on my red top. One time I even let it drain down to nothing, did the optima recharge (hook it up to a good 12v non optima battery and a charger) then put it back on the trickle and it seems as healthy as ever.

...and where the AGM battery is called gel and where the output of the device is said to have something to do with what kind of battery you have instead of what the load on the battery is, etc
