  • 99 Explorer losing coolant

My mom's V6 99 Explorer is using/losing coolant enough to require adding a pint - a quart a week or so. I couldn't find any leaks. It doesn't seem to be the heater core either. That leaves the intake or a headgasket? It doesn't white smoke on start up or running that I can see. Is there a common problem area for these that I should look at first?

mine was head gaskets. heads are prone to cracking on those too. I put an engine in mine.

triple check the t-stat housing...do you have a pressure tester??? if not, I'd spend 30 or so dollars before you waste money

You should be able to get a kit cheap to check for gasses in you coolant at autozone.

The thermostat housing was cracked. It's a big relief for her because she can't really afford to do a major repair or get a new car right now. Thanks for the advice.
