How do you make sure that you have 28 spline axles?

I know due to the code that it is a 3.08 8.8 Non-Locking rear due to the code on the tag:

    S852A
    3.08 88 6J23

But nowhere does any resource say if it is a 28 spline or 31 spline axle. I'm going to guess 28 because of Ford's tendency to not overbuild parts.

Or maybe not. I've tried looking up "replacement parts" on other websites and some of them show a 31 spline, and some show 28.

      i would guess a 2WD would have 28 spline and 4WD would have 31's

            sounds good sir...

If you are looking to buy a p-trac, just buy a 31..I am most certain it will be correct, and if not, I have a few perfect 28 spline units.

The rear is leaking pretty bad and has gunk all over it.

I had some 80W90 and topped it off, it took a half a quart.

Yesterday, after I had done that, I used carb cleaner to clean off the tags to get the ID off of them.

One of the tags says (75W140 SYN ONLY) on it so today I'm going to drain it, clean it up, and replace the gasket so it quits leaking.

If money was no object (this close to Christmas), I'd just go ahead and have you fix her up.

I got the fluid changed out today and a new gasket on. I forgot how much gear oil stinks.

Should I order a new 31 spline trak-lok or do you have one?
