  • Doing some craziness on a Jeep

Since I'm having trouble finding a Jeep hard top I can afford I had another idea. A jeep camper setup. Like a camper for a truck that sits in the bed, I was thinking of one that takes the bed and over the driver's seat. Of course it would limit your offroading a bit, but I think it'd make it better because if you get stuck you can sleep right there. Closest thing I've found was this:

If you're having trouble finding a hardtop to afford, that's going to be much more expensive.

It looks like a JK-8 conversion which takes the 4 door and turns it into a 2 door with a bed. That's a lot of money by itself. $5500 in parts alone. And that doesn't include the custom camper you'd have put on.

I'd look into roof rack mounted tents like ARB makes if you are looking for that route.
An ARB Touring rooftop tent is the ultimate in comfort and convenience. Mounted to the roof of a vehicle and unfolding in minutes, rooftop tents provide elevated sleeping quarters that are protected from the elements.A rooftop tent means sleep-easy camping.

I don't have a roof. It's the tub, windshield and a roll bar and that's it. I am starting to get creative with my Bug out vehicle

You don't need a roof for that type of tent, simply the rack.

Do you need it to be fully enclosed? A cj5 doesn't exactly have enough room to lay out.

If not, then build a rack system that can be broken down. It could attach at the two points on your windshield where the top normally would, while another portion could slide into a receiver hitch. Couple the two together at the top/rear of the jeep. This could be your basic frame to hang a hammock in and drape some fabric over.

You can get some surplus military tent fabric from the Army Navy store.

Hopefully this isn't too terribly vague.
