  • Anyone had brake pads do this?

Getting on I-30 the other day, went for the brakes and had a super soft pedal and no brakes. Went for them again and they seemed to work fine. Had me on edge but after testing them a few times I started thinking that possibly my foot had slipped or something or that I was just imagining it. Drove for about 30 minutes to my exit and then I realized something was in fact wrong, brakes were making a hellacious grinding noise when I applied them. Got out and checked everything out and figured out what happened.

The rear passenger outter brake pad friction material had seperated from the brake pad backing plate. I assume that when this happened that is why I temporarly had no brakes at all, after applying the brakes for the second time the piston had taken up the slack that was introduced by the lack of the friction material.

The pads weren't cheapo's either, they were Akebono Euro Ultra Premium pads. Here are some pictures comparing the same pad from the other side (obviously this side has the exact same amount of miles, driving, etc.) so you can see how much friction material must have come off.

Damn, looks like a hell of a manufacturer's defect that could get ugly. I have never seen anything like that happen before.

It happens to all pads from time to time . Just be glad you're ok .
