  • 28oz. or 50oz. flywheel, what should I have used?

Should've asked this at the BEGINNING of the 5 speed conversion, now I have an annoying vibration.

I installed a NEW 28oz. flywheel. Confident that everything is seated, I even used my calibrated torque wrench to torque everything.

    Should I have used a 50oz. flywheel?

This is on a 1992 LX 5.0, all stock.

Its actually not too bad. Its smooth as silk at 1500-2000 in all gears. Even under acceleration, it dosen't start till around 3000, and I can pull it all the way to 5500 or so without it being too bad. It at its worst under decelleration of all things.

If you only knew the damage you were doing with the wrong one on there. Vibrations whether you feel them or not are deadly to a engine

Oh I know, dont worry. This conversion has all of 25 miles on it so far, and now that I've learned the error of my ways, I will be replaceing the flywheel this weekend.

Can you not replace the harmonic balancer?

Good question, I don't know. Hopefully someone thats been down this road before will chime in.

Sure would be easier to change the balancer than dropping the trans, again.

I believe the 50oz is needed to counter balance the engine. If you have a 90 model 302 HO it requires the 50oz on both ends unless you want vibration and premature engine failure

No , you would need to have to have the crank rebalanced in order to do that. The only solution is to replace the flywheel

Correct, it's dependent on the imbalance of the crank shaft

I really appreciate the input, G.., and all the others. Looks like I get to spend some more time under my car. Yay me! That's what I get for getting in a hurry. I bought the flywheel locally so I could get the trans in a day earlier. Look where that got me. Live and learn I guess....

Yep, I used a 28oz in my 84' 302. I honestly don't remember what balancer we used though...man it's been a long time since we restored her...getting foggy now.

But I remember installing the wrong flywheel as well (we thought since the trans was from a 93' GT we should match it...wrong)
