  • F250 transmission

Well I think I just blew up my tranny after picking my son up from daycare this evening. I rolled out at about half throttle from a stop when I felt and heard a loud bang, I was able to coast to a side street where I tried to use all forward gears, reverse and then I tried 4 wheel drive before I shut it down. The drive shaft is still intact, so I'm guessing I snapped something in the transmission. It's a stock 2000 F250 with 225k miles and there hasn't been any signs of the tranny or anything else acting up, but I guess I was about due for an expensive repair on this thing.
I'm real leery about putting my vehicles in the shop, but I'm pretty certain this is going to be beyond my skill level of repair. Does anybody have a solid recommendation for diesel/tranny shops around DFW? I live in Keller, but I'll consider taking it anywhere in the area for a reputable shop.

    TIA,
    John

It's an auto. It does have a faint 'tranny whine' now, even in park.

Even if its the transfer case, going into 2wd should lock the front and rear section of it together and it should move. I'm no expert on automatics but it sounds like something in the front like the input shaft or convertor if it won't move at all.

Thanks for the reference. It's being towed to Mike's shop as we speak. I did a little research online last night and based on that it sounds like the mechanical diode blew apart, which means it will need to be completely rebuilt. I feel pretty good about taking it to Mike's after talking to him on the phone... he's going to do a few upgrades including a custom built torque converter with a billet front cover that he's building.
I'll update my thread when I get the truck back.

I wanted to give an update to the outcome of my transmission problem. I took my truck to Mike's Trick Shift and he said the converter came apart and took out the input shaft. So he did a total rebuild including a custom torque converter. This thing shifts GREAT, it's better than when the truck was new. It shift's smooth at low rpm's and firm when I lay into it.
Mike is a great guy to work with and I highly recommend him for any of your auto tranny needs.
