  • how can i figure out what gears are in my car

I bought the car used and i have no idea what gears are in the car. I though they were stock, but i just did an aod to t5 swap and 1st and second gear seem pretty short. I need to figure out, because i need to buy a speedo gear for the tranny because my speedometer doesn't work right now. Car is an 88lx 5.0 and my t5 was out of a 93 5.0. in 5 gear at 65mph im around 2200 rpm. When the aod was in there, i was at 3,500 rpm at 60mph in second gear. can some one please help in the right direction?... thanks.

Jack up the rear end with both back wheels off the ground. Turn the driveshaft and count how many time the driveshaft rotates for every one rotation of the wheels. If it takes 3 and 1/2 rotations of the driveshaft you have 3.55's for instance. 3 and 3/4 turns = 3.73's

This the best way I know, too. I marked the tire tread with white shoe polish so I could spot it as it came around.

It works well... Be sure to mark the inside of the tire so you can see it while you are under the car turning the driveshaft.

Man, I would just pull the rear cover off and count the pinion and ring gear teeth and divide the ring gear (big number) by the pinion gear (little number).

There's no telling when the last time the differential fluid was changed anyways, so now would be a good time to freshen it up. That's one thing that people always skip when they buy a car. We always check/change the engine oil, and even trans fluid, but the rear end rarely gets checked/changed.

the teeth numbers are usually stamped in the ring gear too

Since the topic of gears is already going...

What's the benefit of upgrading the diff cover? I'm getting parts together for a gear swap and see people recommending these

Don't forget the benefit of going faster from a lighter wallet.

Few street cars need this modification. On the other hand, if you have the coin and want the bling, or if your car is launching hard, by all means add this modification

For me... I stripped the shit out of the fill plug so it was just easier to buy an aftermarket cover that included a new fill plug.
