  • 96 GT heater core, bad as everyone says?

I know the part is cheap, I'm just not sure I want to take the time to do this myself. Any tips or suggestions? If I don't do it myself, how much should I expect to pay someone to do it?

my only tip is to buy a replacement heater core from ford ONLY!!! You dont want to have to tear it back out again in a few years cause it was a cheap parts store replacement

A cut and paste from my quick write up on corral
The dash was actually a LOT easier then I thought it would be. Here is a quick how to.
      Disconnect battery
      Remove seats
      Remove shifter knob and bezel
Remove 2 phillips holding armrest cubby hole
Remove two 7mm bolts holding center console down under cubby hole
Remove two 7mm bolts holding center console to the dash frame (one on each side of the shifter)
      Remove door sills
      Remove L&R kick panels
Remove trans tunnel carpet plugs (one each side of tunnel)
Remove glove box (three 7mm bolts)
Remove knee bolster and trim (six?? 8mm bolts)
Remove defrost trim (carefull age may have made the clips brittle)
Locate and remove four 8mm bolts at trans tunnel holding dash to frame
Locate and remove three 8mm bolts accross the top of the dash
Remove four 15mm nuts from steering wheel studs (leave whole assembly in the car)
Unhook the wirring harnesses at the steering wheel and let it lay on the floor
Unplug the two airbag harnesses in the drivers foot well just to the right of the gas pedal
Unplug the body and dash harnesses in the drivers kick panel
Unplug the a/c harness inside the golve box opening
Unplug the antenea inside the glove box opening
      Unplug the vacuum line plug
Unplug the dash harnesses in the passenger kick panel
Remove the two 8mm bolts at the far right of dash just under the pillar (one is accessable at an angle through the glove box opening)
Remove the 8mm bolt on the driverside just under the pillar (accessable through the knee bolster openings)
Remove the 17mm??? nut just under that bolt and pull dash away but not out
Remove the temp control mechanizism on the heater box
Check for other connections that are still made and pull dash

Here are some pics of the bolt locations

If you look at this pic you can see the goupings of blue tape, those are the connectors that needed to be unplugged.

      Hope this was helpful,
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

        Cliff notes...unless you've done a few, it's a bitch.

Dash out in an hour and a half or 45 minutes if you have done it before. It helps to have a buddy when it comes time to physically pull it out of the car. Having a convertible makes it a TON easier.

Just think, it could be worse. Ill be doing the front heater core in my Suburban this week and I have to do all that AND also disconnect the A/C lines at the firewall so I can pull the ac/heater box from the firewall to get the old core out and new one in.

I cant believe engineers design shit this bad!

They didn't design it for you to fix it. They designed it for you to keep a tech busy for a few hours at the GM dealer and make the dealer $500.

I have a friend who can do the dash in that vehicle before lunch and not look the least bit rushed. I've seen him do a town car in less than 5 hours with hand tools.

LOL at $500. Most HC jobs are over 1k total.

There were a few guys on the old board that could R&R fox-body heater cores in a little over an hour and would charge accordingly, like $150 or so labor. It's been several years, but I do miss those guys.

It's a bitch. Never done it on a mustang, but looking at the instructions above, it's the exact same as the Mark VIII that I did.
