having some serious problems with my daily. 91v6/5spd even though its efi and coil on plug, the damn thing acts like its got a flooded carb and a distributer outta whack with way too much timing . all started when i changed the battery out for a new one. any ideas?

Thats not a lot of info to go on but maybe a plugged up cat or low fuel pressure.

im assuming the cat is good because the car has a very new exhaust pipe and muffler but i havent checked the cat yet. wouldnt the cat stink if that were the case?

as far as fuel pressure goes, car just added a new air filter and now have a new fuel filter but not installed yet.

it acts like it is either not getting neough fuel or too much spark/timing. do you suggest a tuneup?

i would recommend a tune up for sure replace the easy/least exspensive parts first.id say pull codes and see what comes up first tho.

They weren't COP in 91, should have been a coil pack in those years. I say start simple, check your grounds and battery connections, then go from there. Could be the ignition module acting up, could be the crankshaft position sensor, ECT, or even a knock sensor for that matter. You need the run the KOEO and KOER tests see if anything shows up. Personally, my money is on the ignition control module, they can cause symptoms like this.

your right it has a coil pack but that still means there isnt a distributer i can mess with right?

You can unscrew the O2 sensor to check if the cat is plugged. The engine should pick up RPM. Also, check the EGR valve and make sure that is clean. My 5.0 ran like dog shit and sounded like it was running on 7 cylinders because the EGR was clogged. Those are simple and free checks. No use easter egging it with parts.

Correct, but there are plug wires that can go bad. It's weird that the explorer didn't use a camshaft position sensor, instead relying solely on the crankshaft position sensor.

Take my t-bird for example, it has the same coil pack style ignition, but where the dizzy should be, there is a camshaft position sensor. It works just like a dizzy, if you turn it, it will cause the car to run like shit.

I have a '91 4x4 Explorer with 300K. How old are the plug wires? How many miles on the plugs?

It still knocks down 20 plus m.p.g.
