Tensioners wear out. I have had three on my cobra.
Idler pulleys wear out. I have replaced it once.
Belts wear out.
Alternators wear out. Effectively, I've had three.
If the car has not had any of these replaced, it is probably time. I don't know if it is blanket selling or not. Maybe just a tensioner would fix it. Maybe a tensioner and belt.

Pop the hood and watch what the belt does when your old lady mashes the throttle. If the tensioner is moving excessively, then replace it.
If you pop the hood and see lots of cracks on the inside (ribbed portion) of your belt, then replace it.
If none of this is happening, pull your alternator. It's easy to replace the brushes.
Or you can have it rebuilt for less money than replacing it.

What would excessive play be considered? Went and jumped the GT today. Check engine is on (forgot my scanner but really sure its battery/power related) battery light was on for about 5 minutes (kept the jumping car hooked up) Belt squeals a little when engine is cold, the tensioner arm moves back and forth about a centimeter.
