11 yr old tensioner , no extra labor on the belt , and a alternator to fix it . The retest to always cover your ass . Rarely need it but always state it .

Tensioners wear out. I have had three on my cobra.
Idler pulleys wear out. I have replaced it once.
          Belts wear out.
Alternators wear out. Effectively, I've had three.
If the car has not had any of these replaced, it is probably time. I don't know if it is blanket selling or not. Maybe just a tensioner would fix it. Maybe a tensioner and belt.

Pop the hood and watch what the belt does when your old lady mashes the throttle. If the tensioner is moving excessively, then replace it.

If you pop the hood and see lots of cracks on the inside (ribbed portion) of your belt, then replace it.

If none of this is happening, pull your alternator. It's easy to replace the brushes.

Or you can have it rebuilt for less money than replacing it.

If you go to the trouble to replace the brushes change out the bearings too.

Glad you posted this, I am actually having a similar problem in my GT. Wouldnt a worn tensioner be indicated by a squealing belt?

                      Not always.

Randy, if you have an oil leak then you will have some belt slippage.

What would excessive play be considered? Went and jumped the GT today. Check engine is on (forgot my scanner but really sure its battery/power related) battery light was on for about 5 minutes (kept the jumping car hooked up) Belt squeals a little when engine is cold, the tensioner arm moves back and forth about a centimeter.

                          UPDATE!!!

Its not the belt. Even though it was pretty chewed up looking, i swapped it out but it still does it now when driving the car at normal speeds (1500+ rpm range) So I'll be buying an alternator will be bought tomorrow in the AM.

Mine did that for a bit. Thought it was the alternator wire in the harness.. alternator shook itself loose from burrying the accelerator so much. Tightened the little bastart back up, tested the batt/ alternator and both had a strong charge..
