  • Percentage gain of more pistons in calipers?

I know its going to vary. But I was considering doing the upgrade for my 94 GT. The one where you can take some 2 piston calipers off an 01+ and replace the factory single piston calipers that came on the 94. It seems to be a fairly typical mod. But is it really worth it? And if so, how much would you get out of going from 2 piston, to something like 4 or 6 piston? Where is the point of diminishing returns?

If you are going to waste your time with brakes, do the cobra brakes. 13inch rotors and 4 piston calipers.

If that's not enough get the cobra R brakes on eBay. Theyre huge and 6 piston.

IMO going from your brakes to newer GT brakes wouldn't give a good enough return in performance. Also check out a better brake prop valve I hear that's a common mod and gives good results, as well as a better master cyl

The car has decent brakes already...four wheel disc. Good rotors, stainless lines, and some Hawk pads will work well. Unless you're auto-xing, the brakes are adequate. As already stated, if you just want to upgrade, the Cobra brakes are nice.

Why do you consider it a waste?

Also, I take it you're referring to the '04 cobra brakes, correct?

            Wont gain much if any.

            The 03/04 yes.

Upgrading brakes IS NOT a waste.

Going from 95 to 01 brakes is a waste. IE

Remember that along with 4 piston calipers, you may need to swap out the master cylinder, too.

Mach 1 brakes are good too. 13 inch rotors.

The 03-04 Cobra front caliper is 2 piston.

Please explain the difference in Mach/Bullit/Cobra brakes to us please.

It was a huge difference when i put new edge brakes in my 98. Totally differnet and well worth it in my opinion. Good thing is you don't have to change out Rotors. All u need is the fine thread banjo bolt and there is a guy selling both in eBay just for the swap. Google it and you'll need the brackets. On the back of the calupers you need to grind down the lip and the factory line from your car will go right on. Fwiw I picked up two pbr calipers off a 03 Gt with brackets for 65 shipped from a guy in California. You may not fins that good if a deal but there pretty reasonable

Ok if I am understanding you, you just picked up a pair of 03 GT calipers off ebay and changed out those two main bolts?

Its all based on piston area. Most 6 piston calipers have less volume than the average 4 piston. Which actually looses braking pressure with a given mc size and pedal ratio

So its like uh.. if you're getting more pistons, you don't want them to shrink? IIRC, I think I've even seen 8 piston calipers on one of those build it yourself hotrod shows. Think it was "Musclecar" or "Horsepower TV" or something.

There's more to brakes than just piston number. It's the size/venting of the pad, the size of the pistons, the bore size of the master cylinder, the composition of both the rotor (Steel, aluminum, titanium, carbon) and pad. Each type of rotor has a specific pad requirement, and each type of driving style has a different pad.

Generally with 6 piston, and some 4 piston setups the first piston that will see the rotor is the largest, and they taper off in diameter from there.
