  • New SHORTBLOCK. Break-in advice???

Hey guys last month on September 16 I went through deep water. I have a JLT cold air intake that went all the way down to my passenger fender (shop cut it shorter since). The engine sucked in enough water to bend all the valves.

Luckily, insurance covered it (I didn't have the $5,874 for repairs) and I got a brand new shortblock and the shop refinished my heads.

I was instructed to break it in for 1,000 miles after they added break-in oil.

They suggested to baby it and keep the engine under 4,000rpms, but the engine feels MUCH more powerful than before it got water damage so I have got on it a few times but NEVER over 4,500.

Do you guys have any advice for this? I wanna see what this new block can do as soon as I can.

The shop that built your engine gave their advice. Why are you asking us?

You should not do what the shop told you to do.

Get on the internets and ask a bunch of mostly clueless assholes what to do instead.

If they reccommended 1000 miles at nothing over 4k rpms then you out to be able to jack the car up and put it in drive and run it at 12k for 300 miles and knock some time off

Money don't grow on trees and oil is expensive. Why waste the money when water works just as well

1k miles isn't that much, I am doing break in also. I for one, am going to break in my new motor the right way after being carless for a few months.....but that's just my opinion.

This article gives some food for thought:

Basically the guys that say run it like ya stole it seem to have some merit.

There have been tons of research done in this area and he has a valid ?. Unfortunatly almost all of the ring seat happens in the first heat cycle an engine goes trough. After that it doesn't matter. I alway run a fresh motor long enough to make sure there are no leaks and then I take it out and leave it in first gear, hammer on it and let off an let then engine compression brake it self this really puts load on the rings and seats them in. Do this three or four times, let it cool and change the oil. After that its fair game.
