    2002 Mazda protege 2.0

    Car started smoking on startup
Then car started smoking morning startup and quitting time, roughly 8hrs
Then started smoking morning startup lunch time quitting time.

Car would NOT smoke while driving

Car had check engine light on due to bad sensor after catalytic
But car would run fine idle fine no issue giving 23-25mpg

Had valve stem seals replaced got car back idleing at 500 prior was 1000 and car feels like 302 with cam

Changed plugs no difference mechanic took it back checked springs all within thousand, timing was checked, new timing belt installed still same issue

    Compression is #1~3 200psi #4 180psi

    What can it be?

I'd do a bleed down on 4 and see how it compares. After a valve stem seal change you say it's running really rough? Do you have any misfire codes? Is there HLA noise? I'd also take a plug wire off each cylinder and see if there is no change on one of them. Might have a dead hole.

Only codes are p037 for misfire and p300 for bad u2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 after catalytic converter,

No noise just miss that will even out over 1k rpms

Well there you go, there's a misfire for sure. I'd do your normal due diligence and check for spark on each cylinder, and pull wires and see if you can find the problem. It's possible when he was putting plugs back in he smashed the gap or something like that.

Are you certain he put that belt back on correctly, and it's timed right?

Yup it was put together with old belt and tore it apart again for new belt

Oh okay, you're saying it was doing this before you replaced the timing belt. If it's a miss at idle but not up top (and you're sure it isn't missing up high, it is harder to detect) then it sounds like ignition. You said he checked the valves, and they are all within spec so that kind of limits your diagnosis.

P0300 is a random cylinder missfire code. Either timing is off or when he did the springs he didn't put the lash caps back in the correct order. These engines have solid buckets on top of the valves and will make all kinds of noise if not put back in the right order. It may not be opening one or more of the valves all the way.

Also 200psi seems high for this engine. Normally wouldn't matter but if the cam timing is off this may be an indicator.
