prepare to spend cubic dollars to get the car really light. I have a 2000 GT that has a full cage, heavy MM suspension parts and sub frames, big brakes, a fire system and my fat 270lb ass in the seat and the Car weighs 2970# post race with about 1/3 tank of fuel. Dry weight without fluids is around 2640#.

There are 100's of pounds to be found, but you have to replace it with something to keep the car intact. If it's a track only car, there is a LOT of steel that can come out if you have a full cage...not to mention the savings of an aluminum motor.

Like I said....Cubic Dollars. Getting light is just a matter of money and imagination.

Go with a new style starter and hit the Mazda Dealership for a Miata battery. It will drop about 35lbs from the car.

The stock brakes are also VERY heavy. Just swapping to the later aluminum calipers, rotors and spindles will save 30+ pounds.

Aluminum heads are also of proven value.

              Too late for that

I'm sure there is a list somewhere from 10 years ago of the weights of all that stuff and more

what a pita, just throw an ls1/351w in it!

seriously though, what a pita! i like pulling up, a/c blasting, chica in the passenger seat, radio on, windows (read: glass) up, sound deadner in tact, no missing sheet metal, etc. i know i am leaving some on the table, but thats the cost i'm willing to pay to enjoy driving it for longer then 7 seconds at a time.

just my two cents. just add more power/suspension.

                    I agree, it's called "style".

No a/c and falling asleep driving because of the booming inside the car due to no sound deadner and short exhaust is no fun. Been there, no thanks. Save everything though, you'll be putting it all back on soon.

Luckily for Mike, he gets to enjoy it for a whole 8 1/2 seconds at a time.

The door crash bars are well worth the effort - but depends on what you value your time at. Those bars are something like 33# each. Bigshoe just did his. I'll say this, be prepared to spend a day doing it and be very careful or you'll make the doorskin wavy (the bars are glued to the outer part of the door)

Don't forget to pull up the carpet and remove ALL of the tar paper with a heat gun (if you haven't mentioned it) it's worth 20-30lbs.

Tubular front suspension will be the biggest bang along with some sort of drag-race wheel.
I took 48 pounds out of EACH door.
