I personally like the 3650, they can be had cheaper then the t56. The input shaft on the 3650 is suppose to be the weak link. But I've seen one get beat on with 470rwhp and 600rwhp and it lasted fine.
That would be the easy route.03 Dark Shadow Grey Mach1

The T45 and TR3650 are really about the same in strength. Each have their pros and cons. Since you have a T45, I would either spend the money to build it or replace it with a T56. I recently did a T45 with billet shift keys, bronze fork pads, billet shift forks but stock internals for a boosted Cobra making around 500 at the wheels. The key to making it last is going with a soft hitting clutch instead of something that hammers the transmission.

OP, go with what majorownage said....keep your stock aluminum block, buy all quality parts and take it to a reputable machine shop. dont forget to add in all the little things that you may not be thinking about because that shit will nickel and dime you to death (is now a good time to put fresh timing chains on? etc)2011 Mustang GT

Line bore, overbore, decking
Crank balance, polish, new bearings

That was the total cost for me including labor was around 2.5k because I waited for deals
i'd look in to promotion t-45's. thats what i plan on running when my forged motor is done. to be honest i wanted to go auto but built 4r70w's are expensive!
brightmare.net ran a stock t-45 behind his 10 sec mustang on the show passtime. not sure how long it lasted though.Last edited by jnobles06; 10-10-2011, 05:05 PM.

As for the clutch, basically you want to stay away from a puck style setup that hits really hard. It will twist the input shaft in a high powered or heavy car. You can have a 26 spline shaft welded on to the stock input shaft which increases the strength but that runs about $400 to do.
Other things that will slightly help are having the internals cryo treated and polished but again, that adds to the price tag of the unit by about $350.

Find a mark 8 motor ~200 bucks. And throw 1000-1500 in internals in it.

Stock crank, 5140 I beam rods, good 2618 pistons, head studs, have the heads cleaned up and a good valve job. Boost it till mid 600's and call it a day. The 3650 and t45's are both junk, I'd find a used t56 and swap it in. Having the crank turned-$100, rods-$250, pistons-$500, head studs-$250, boring-$250, plus whatever the heads take. Should be able to do it for around $2-2500 if you put it together yourself. A good used T56 should be around $12-1500 for the whole swap.
