  • LSx Turbo Setup. Need all turbo peeps inside!

Starting to put together the parts I need to do a turbo setup.

Before I get flammed, I am building this setup on a budget, being that I am going to stay on the stock bottom end until something happens I don't want to dump a ton of cash into a high end turbo just to have the short block crap the bed and take it out on the way (or vice versa).

The setup is a 10:1 364ci ls-based motor. Going to keep the stock 317 heads (72cc chambers, 2.00 intake and 1.55 exhaust). Going to swap out the cam that is in it in favor a a stock cam most likely (196/207 @ 050".467/.479 116lsa), but leave my .660 lift dual springs installed. Based on this information (and my very limited knowledge) a 76-80mm turbo w/an a/r of .96-1.0 would be ideal for a 364ci spinning 6000-6200rpm @ around 10psi. Any input here would be great as I am a turbo newb.

With that said, I have found some pretty insane deals on turbo parts on ebay and such and need to have some honest opinions on what is "okay" to go cheap on and what is not.

    For example:

    Turbo:
    You can get a 76mm on3performance turbo (I've heard you can request a .96 a/r) for a little over $300

    You can get a 76mm Magnum turbo (.96 a/r) for around $700

    Or you can get a B/W S400-75 83mm T4 for around $750

I've read good and some bad about the on3performance stuff, since the car is a toy and won't ever see any real mileage (prob about 2k miles a year), would this turbo last or should I fork out 2.5x more for the B/W?

    Wastegate:
    eBay special, 44mm wastegate - $70
    OBX 44mm - $200
    TiAL or Precision - $350

Again, would like to save money but don't want to build a grenade.

    Blowoff Valve:
These are all over the map, anywhere from $15-$200. Any real differences here, some come with a flange, some don't, any specific size (I notice a lot are 50mm).

    Intercooler:
These are also all over the place, any good budget brands? Also, anyone know what size works well in the front of a coupe?

    Boost Controller:
Manual vs. electronic. Obviously price varies greatly. You can get a manual controller (i.e. air bleeder) for next to nothing or pay $200 for a profec-b.

I know in the land of DFWmustangs we are all ballers and would never consider sparing any expense, but please don't just bash something because it isn't the best of the best. I don't want to skimp on something that has been proven unreliable however.

    Thanks in advance!

For the turbo I would get a Borg Warner S400 and just get it over with. You will never have to worry about it again. Only downside is its BIG.

Wastgate/blowoff/Intercooler I would probably go with Ebay knockoffs if your trying to save cash.

On the motor itself, do yourself a favor and swap out the rod bolts with ARP. That seems to be the only real weak link as long as the tune is decent.

stick with a good turbo, borg warner s400/s475
/s480 or similar would be great! The bullseye versions are ok, their customer service has been iffy and wild bill is a fag.

master power makes a great 70mm and 76mm that are super cheap and very reliable.

precision turbo are good, little more pricey than the last two though.

flipped truck manifolds work great for ls motors.

Knockoff blow offs are ok , wastgates are meh?
If it is a knockoff, take it apart and clean it
you may want to look at jgs W/Gs or precision the b&g turbo stocks. Do over 40mm, prob 44 or 50 on the W/G would be good to meter low boost.

run off the spring to reduce costs or go all out and do an ams500/1000.

egay coolers are ok, lots of success with them, just pressure test them.

I'm currently piecing together a kit for my lsx truck.
      mpt76
      jgs gate
      truck manifolds
      big injectors/fuel system for e85
      tial bov
      ebay cooler
      turbo specific converter/cam
stock long block ( I've seen 6.0s make well over 900rwhp with just upgrade springs/retainers/rod bolts.
      Are you on theturboforums.com?

I went with a Master power turbo (76 with a .96) , all the Hale's speed cars, John's wagon and the GTO have them and have had no problems

I have the ebay intercooler and cold side kit

WG and BOV I have the ebay tial knock off. the only thing we did was take the WG apart and make sure everything looked like it was inplace correctly. and cut one of the springs to get it about 7 psi (it comes with 3 different rates of spring)

I don't have a boost controller. I sent the waste gate up to run 8psi and leave it alone. I started to get a controller.... but then you can turn up the boost too easily and I knew I didn't need to have that availability all the time.

if you want to come to the house you can check out all of my stuff. its off of the car right now so it would be easy to look at.

PM me and let me know if you want to come by

Thanks everyone for the responses so far.

I can't do flipped truck manifolds because of the A/C stuff, they'd run right into the compressor. Trying to get my hands on some c6 manifolds however because based on the way they look they would work perfect.

Another question, since the B/W and other good turbo's are 750+, is it ever okay to buy used? If so, how much could I get a decent 76-80mm for used? Anyone seen anything lately that was a great deal?

Used, yes. Take them a part and check the CHRA and also check for end-play and the compressor/ext turbines/housings for chips, gashes and so on.

There are a few good turbos on ttf.com but you need to be a member to search the turbo classifieds.

A billet bullseye s380r with ETT is F/S on ttf for like $900 I believe. I had one and it was my favorite, out of like 10 turbo setups. Everything from mpt70s to s400s, lol.

                            reliable, ~550-600rwhp, pump gas. car goes 7.0's@98 w/probably ~400rwhp, i'd be happy if it'd do ~6.30's.

                              I have 2 used Garrett 57mm's and a new twin intercooler I would sell for $650. Made 800 on my stock heads/cams 4.6 with a turbo 400
