What tools are needed to pull the camshaft out of a 2.3 SOHC Ford engine? I assume there is at least some sort of valve spring compressor. Where do I get these tools?

You need one of those 2.3 spring compressor tools to remove the followers I think a 17mm wrench for the sproket (loosen that first before you cut the belt), and a damn good phillips driver to remove the backing plate deal. DON'T DROP THE FUCKING SCREWS DOWN THE OIL PASSAGE IN THE HEAD!!!! No idea on where to get the tools. What's the issue?

if you literally just need to remove the cam from the head, you can do it without a spring compressor. you can slide the followers off with the cam on the base circle

I never had a problem popping the followers off and reinstalling them with a long screwdriver. No shit. You don't need a valve spring compressor to remove the followers.

Once the followers are out, it's a simple deal to remove the camshaft. There are two #3 screws at the end that keep a cam retainer in place. I recommend lining up the timing marks before removing anything.

          Here's a nice tutorial: http://www.turboford.org/faq/cam_swap.shtml

Forrest, I'm pulling a Ranger cam, roller followers & lifters, then later install in an older "flat tappet" (non roller) engine.

Is this a turbo motor? If so get an adjustable timing gear and retard that thing 4deg other wise don't bother with that cam.

You want a A237 instead of that ranger roller?

as greenbullit stated, no special tools needed. I always used to use a pickle fork to pop the followers off. and if the engine is in the car, I used to use #3 philips bit and a wrench. there are two #3 phillips screws holding the cam retainer plate

yeah, first one I went to pull I was like "how in the FUCK!?!?!"

thankfully I had a bit set in my tool box... #3 philips bit + 1/4" wrench = success

What is an A237 cam? I'll be putting together a N/A carbed 2.3 that I want to get maximum MPG's from. I've heard the Ranger cam gives strong torque & is good for 2-3 MPG. This will go in a 2500 lbs 81 Capri with a T-5
