I think a trick flow top end kit on a stock 302 short block would do wonders in a miata. Cheap, easy and the swap is cake compared to lsx and it's would perform better then any n/a 4.6, and weigh less. If you happen to get bored spray some juice and if your not content then, well you have a problem.
300+ rwhp in a small 1800lb car would be fun as hell.
If you put a 4.6 in the front of that car you will tail spin everywhere because of the weight of the engine will be heavy as fuck. That is the advantage of a ls1. They're aluminum and light weight, and smaller In dimension then the modular engine.
You have to consider weight balance when messing with a tiny car like that.
