  • Learn me the 1990s.

    As the title says.

I know what I'm doing has already been done, and it's nothing new to anyone here. But bear with me, I'm looking to make my 91' coupe as quick as possible while keeping the stock throttle body, intake, cam, heads and headers. I don't want to do any porting or "false" stock part modifications.

Right now, I have a Mac short ram intake, off road h pipe, electric fans, aluminium driveshaft and 3.73 gears.

Im going to replace the valve springs, and do 1.72 rocker arms.

I currently have no p/s or smog pump. I'm debating taking the a/c off but keeping the components in case I want to put it back on. I also want to run a e water pump and running nothing but an alt belt.

I advanced the timing 3* over base, went msd cap and rotor and msd blaster 2 coil.

What other tips or trick do you guys know that I'm missing? I'd like to get the most power possible out of this little e7 headed 302.

My current best is a 8.52 at 80mph with 1.86 60ft. That was on old slicks, stock suspension minus the front sway bar.

    What do you guys suggest?

    Welcome to the 1990s everybody!

    Thanks alot!

I ran my 89' at 16-18 deg and it ran better then the recommended 14. when you do the valve springs put in light weight keepers and retainers. Also consider a new timing chain. I would ditch that crap intake and get a used AMS Power Pipe. Port your mass air and TB. Have you considered an X-Pipe and I imagine you're running Flows, get rid of those for some bullet types

What springs would be ideal for what I'm doing?

Bullets would be loud and having a car that runs 8s and sounds like a NASCAR would be silly. I've also considered a prochamber mid-pipe.

The AMS intake is the best out there and is on the list of things to do.

I'd like to keep the mass and throttle body stock non ported.

That's nice, I'm doing sometning right if I'm running 8.5s on a stock motor.

It can be faster. And that's why I'm here.

I like to learn as much as possible before I do something, and not throw parts at it and hope for the best. It's not a guessing game for me.

go watch an NHRA national event in the stock eliminator classes. when you see a 3400 pound, iron head 327 camaro with a quadrajet and an iron intake manifold running 9.30's you will get your feelings hurt on what is possible with stock parts. I would venture to say that a stock class legal 5.0 mustang should run somewhere in the 7.50's or so, maybe quicker.

I'm sure there is some power to be had in 1.7's. Just go with the base TF Roller Spring set. It's about $120 and good to .544 lift. I'm sure a really trick valve job would help as well. Perhaps remove the thermactor bumps from the exhaust ports. Send your intake to T-Moss for some porting. Put a tb off a 93-95 Lightning on there. It looks stock but is 65mm. I'm sure a wideband would help so that you can really dial in a good 12.7-13.3 AFR for the entire powerband.

Porting would help, but if the heads or intake come off, they won't be going back on.

Trying to avoid that, and see what I can do stock no porting.

Why unnecessarily limit yourself to stock?

Peice of mind, just curious of what it can do.

I'll build something better in time, just want to see what all it can do.

Get your suspension sorted out and brag about being fast with only suspension mods.

                            That's the idea. Haha

I like being able to say "stock engine 185k miles".

I'm a fan of the south side lift bars. Run those, your drag springs, tubular k and a arms, boxed upper, battle boxes. Old school but effective.
