Any tire techs in here?

I need someone who's preferably on my side of the planet, who works at a tire shop who can see if they have any 'scrap' lead weight that I can haul off.

We need it for ballast in a race car - somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-200#

Lead shot from someplace like Cabellas is out of the question, they are HIGH.

How about using weights from a weight set?

Most of my shops sell the weights for scrap or actually re-use them

Thats a possibility, but packaging is a concern. We can get a lot of lead in a small space... We talked about the weight sets, but most likely can't be the sand kind

Have you been to smiley's? It's usually a $1 a pound but it's drilled and ready to bolt in.

I've used them with success.

Go to a plumbing supply house. They had plumber's lead in 25 pound pieces. It usually is 5, 5 pound blocks that are molded together but you can take them appart easily for melting to use with cast iron sewer pipe.

Believe it or not, we looked into that - in a 'bigger' car it would work, but in a fox coupe, we have relatively small places to store a big amount of weight. So, it has to be basic/compact shapes.

That thing has to weigh more than that - Lead is somewhere around 6.5 oz/cubic inch. So, 6.5oz X 72sq/in =468oz=29.25lbs.

However, I think I have an easy solution. Steel is about .2833/cubic inch. In a bar that measures 4X4X12 (96 cubic inches). that's about 54lbs. Now, keep in mind, I'd have to cut it up, drill some holes and make mounting tabs -but it's pretty cheap and readily available... and in the long run, easier to work with than lead. May have to try that one out.
