My expedition began something similar and it got steadily worse - I would go out to start it and it would just turn over, and after you cycled the key a few times it would start. It turned out to be a failing fuel pump.
Another cheap thing to try is to replace the fuel pump relay.

My sons Lightning did this exact thing for months, finally after doing some research it turned out to be the Distrubutor. The strator switch goes bad, you can replace just that but the dizzy has to come out anyway and a good one is about the same amount as the dizzy itself. this is where I would start. I've had this issue on several cars. New fuel pump no more problem. If you check the fuel pressure in the no start situation you will know immediately whether this is the problem.
