Looks to me like the rod that used the bearing in the picture was installed backwards, the bearing rode the radius on the edge of the crank journal and it beat the shit out of it.

That rod bearing went through some hell, but I wanna know what the hell was grinding on the base of that piston?!?

What's the crankshaft look like, where that chinga'd up piston was pulled?

It "looked " ok. When I ran my finger acrossed it you could feel the slightest variance. Hopefully it can still be turned. I took a few pics of the crank but the differnce was so small it wouldn't show up on a picture

Is this on the back side of the crank? The piston is gonna be the farthest down the cylinder when that rod bearing part of the crank is pointing at the bottom of the oilpan.

So the backside of the crank has got to be what got into that piston.

When a crank is turned, they're machining down where the bearings go to make it as round as possible. The crank is definitely going to be harder than that piston, so I don't think it would grind enough out for a balance issue....I think?

Would a converter ballooning cause this?

It could in a round-about way. It would have to have torn up the thrust FIRST for the rod to get into the radius of the crankshaft.

Those pistons look like hell for 6,000 miles.

Agreed. I believe in the zero miles this short block had as much as I believe in the toothfairy

I don't know his last name) chris is doing the install, and I switch my 302 setup to a 351. I didn't want to spit out a list of parts unless you are curious.

                            Just a word

if your car's a automatic, the main cause of thrust wear is the converter swelling.
Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
