  • found why i broke the 302

well i hadnt needed to yank the short block all the way out till now. the 351 is back and i am ready to have the engine bay painted and the new motor dropped in. since the short block was out i thought i'd take a look to see if this block could be repaired and sold to recoop some of my money. here is what i found

i guess its not horrible but damn there was only 6k miles on this motor. all the bearings were the same except these that have a "lip" on them. where should these have been specifically.

That's the thust bearing. Your thrust clearance must have been way to tight or to loose and had some serious crank walk. Where you running 30lbs of boost or what? That will beat the bearings out of them.

Yeah, thrust bearing and someone fucked up big time on the rebuild. When I first got my T-bird, I had to rebuild the engine, I had a journal that came with the car showing a rebuild at 143K, I had it at 150K and it was knocking. Tore it down and found no bearing at all on the number 3 rod, no evidence of one, someone just fucked up and forgot to put the bearing in.

Na motor for 5999 miles. Nitrous for 1 mile. Yeah that's the bearing. You can also see on the pistons where its shiny something scuffed it up pretty good

youd better find what caused the thrust issue or your 351 will do the same

Different builder. I paid to have the first one built. I am not mechanically competant so I have to be a checkbook racer. The new build and builder should be better. The good news is I'm learning a lot by pulliing my first motor and disassembling it. I have the greatest respect for you guys and how ya'll do this shit.

This was the only bearing with a lip and it was on the piston located on the passenger side closest to the radiator ( #5?) Is that where this bearing should have gone?

youre missing what im saying...thrust is not necessarily a builder issue, but an installer/combo issue

im thoroughly confused...the pic appears to be a thrust bearing, which saddles the crank...not a rod bearing

Forgive mi ignorance. This bearing was on the crank between the crank and the the rod/rodcap. It was the first one starting from the front of the motor

thats a rod bearing if its enclosed by a rod and cap...the bearing pic you posted looked like a thrust bearing (from the main set)

Ok got ya. Well I am using a different builder, installer, and combo. David did the motor build and machine work.(I think most know who he is.. I don't know his last name) chris is doing the install, and I switch my 302 setup to a 351. I didn't want to spit out a list of parts unless you are curious.

Then it is definately a rod bearing. There were 2 per rod and these two came off the very first place on the crank starting from the front of the motor.
