  • '07 Lexus GS Brakes- compressing front piston, special tool?

Haven't taken it apart yet, but I have time to do it today & need to know...

Can I just compress these with a c-clamp, or do they screw in?

    Thanks in advance.

Front should be push ins. just need a c clamp. my rule for the back is that, if it has a emergency brake cable hooked to caliper, you will need to turn the piston in. Also look for the notches in the rear piston. Fronts are most likely push in. Dont know of any twist in fronts.

Or I think on those the pads go in through the top, then you need some type of prybar or a screwdriver. Does it have a pin through the top of the pad?

Thanks. I thought it was directly related to the ebrake, but my rule of thumb is "you never know what you don't know", so thought I'd ask.

        Thanks!

The back had the pins. I guess I didn't do those correctly, however many months back that was. Stops like no car I've driven, but I guess that it would be the ebrake that's been compromised by just compressing them.

Only time you need a special tool is when the caliper "ratchets". The only time they do that is when they are used for the parking brake. Therefor making the only calipers that need special tooling is some rear calipers.

Fronts should always just slide in, the only time you may need special tools or sometning other then a c clamp or brake caliper compressor is if they have multiple pistons and you need sometning with larger surface area so one piston doesn't fly out as you compress the others. And in that case, just use the clamp on the back of the old pad. Or the brake compressor tool, which has a brake pad shaped backing plate to hold the rest of the pistons in place.
