  • 09 Roush keeps throwing belts

My dad's 2009 Roush 427 keeps breaking the belt. It is supercharged and has one belt that runs everything. He has done research and this seems to be a common complaint for these supercharged Roush cars. He claims Roush is the only one who makes the belt in the right length.

Others seems the think there is just too much tension on the belt... it is the hardest belt to install on the last pulley I have ever done.

My suggestion was to measure the belt and get a custom one made that is higher strength and maybe just a tad bit longer to take some tension off of it.

Spend the money on a cog conversion, expensive but was some of the best money I spent on my Lightnings. I never had belt issues after the swap.

If that's not an option I would make damn sure all the pulleys are aligned and the tensioner is properly adjusted.

I don't think a cog conversion is available - The Roush cars have somewhere around a 128" Belt that runs everything.

Is the car modified? Which pulleys are different?

        Check your alignment X1898373627!

My Saleen had the same problem between the super charger and alternator almost a 1/2 inch of misalignment. Problem fixed no more belt problems.

This might sound like a stupid question, but what is the best way to check alignment? When looking at it it all looks straight.

Good to know. I assumed two belts...

I was going to suggest finding a gates or a gatorback for it - but apparently Roush wanted to cash in on unique belts.

Here's what I found on another forum:

There are no aftermarket belts that fit these cars unless you switch to 8 rib. I have researched this ad nauseum.

Here are the facts based on my research and notes. All belts listed are ones that are anywhere *near* a size that one could use on our cars with either an M90 or a TVS...you can see that in 6 ribs ONLY Roush belts fit...if one is willing to go to an 8 rib setup there are a couple of additional options but that of course requires custom pulleys.

              Roush 6 rib belts:

              2005/2006 FEAD M90 belt: RPP# R07020015 -13-AA / PN 401967 / 131.732"
              2007/2008 FEAD M90 belt: RPP# R07020032-13-AA / PN 402065 / 132.441"
              2009/2010 FEAD M90 belt: RPP# R07020063-13-AA / PN 404078 / 132.638"
              2007/2008 FEAD TVS / P51 belt: RPP# R07020041-13-AA / PN 403805 / 134.370"

Goodyear 8 Rib Gatorback belts (no 6 ribs available in Roush lengths from Goodyear):

              4081295 8PK3290 8 129.5 130.25
              4081360 8PK3455 8 136 136.75

DAYCO 8 rib belts (Top width 1.10” .169” thick) (No 6 ribs in Roush length from DAYCO):

              5081325 132.50 8 W Profile EPDM, Aramid Reinforced Rubber
              5081363 136.30 8 W Profile EPDM, Aramid Reinforced Rubber

GATES belts (6 and 8 rib):

              K061360 136 5/8 6 Micro V belt Width 13/16 (20mm) 40°rib angle
              K081331 133 3/4 8 Micro V belt Width 1 3/32 (28MM) 40°rib angle
              K061360HD 136 1/2 6 13/16 (20MM) 40° FLEET runner Heavy Duty
              K081331HD 133 ¾ 8 1 3/32 (28) 40° FLEET runner Heavy Duty

This is an awesome tool to check Pulley Alignment

I know Speedtek in FtWorth has one. You might check with them and see how much they would charge you to check it out for you.

Also what has been modified on the car so far?

The car is basically how it came from Roush. Car only has 13,000 miles. He has owned it for a year and this is the 3rd belt that has shredded.

                  He has added these mods:
                  1 piece drive shaft
                  Drive Shaft Safety Loop
                  McLeod Twin Disk Clutch
                  Shift light
                  Line Lock
