When my 96 did this, Travis at Gearheads had me pull the computer and take it to him. They put a chip in it, I reinstalled it and drove it to him. They then reflashed it and turned off the Pats. No problems after that.

$100.00 What happened is my column broke, the key would start car but not turn off. When I pulled the steering wheel off, the wire to the ring around the key cylinder broke and shorted out the pats. When I replaced the column, it was doing the same thing yours is doing. The pats had to be reset at dealership or turned off to run. Travis turned it off. The only downside is the theft light flashes for about 15 minutes after starting, then goes off. I think someone has posted in the past here that if you open trunk and find the pats module you can unplug it and jump it to reset, buts its been awhile since I read that and would hate to tell you to do it and mess up your car. I do know that the 96 pats is less involved then the 98, but don't know about 97. You might ask whiteboy what he knows about them.
